Having your teeth cleaned regularly by a professional will keep them healthy and prevent future problems. Plaque and tartar can build up over time on your teeth and cause cavities, gum disease, and permanent tooth loss. At Osuna Dental Care, our dentist can also spot signs of illness or any other issues that could give you trouble in the future. It would help if you got a cleaning twice a year to enjoy optimal oral health. If your teeth are sensitive or prone to bleeding gums, you should visit your dentist more often for preventative care.

What Happens During a Professional Cleaning?

This appointment is the best time for the dentist or hygienist to perform a complete professional cleaning, removing any plaque buildup and stains that regular brushing can’t touch. Your dentist may also complete an oral cancer screening during this visit.

During the visit to our office, our dentist or hygienist will scrape away plaque and tartar from the surface of your teeth with a metal tool called a scaler. They will then brush your teeth with an electric toothbrush before flossing between each tooth and along the gum line. During this process, they will apply a professional-strength fluoride gel to your teeth to help strengthen the enamel and prevent cavities.

Cleaning Instructions from a General Dentist

Brushing and Flossing

Brushing and flossing are two of the most important things you can do for oral health, but sometimes it can be easy to forget your daily oral hygiene habits. You must floss at least once a day to remove plaque from spaces between your teeth and along the gumline. If you’re having trouble remembering to floss, try setting the alarm on your phone or using a toothbrush timer. You can also use toothpaste with a built-in flavor tracker, reminding you when it’s time to switch out your toothpaste. Brushing your teeth at least twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste is also necessary.

Quitting Bad Habits

Besides drinking plenty of water, there are other habits you should avoid if you want to have a healthy smile. For example, smoking and chewing on hard candy or ice can lead to receding gums. If you smoke, then try to avoid cigarettes and other tobacco products.

Another bad habit is grinding your teeth at night. Many people don’t even know they’re doing it while sleeping. It can cause your enamel to wear away, leading to sensitivity. If your dentist tells you you’re grinding your teeth, you may need a night guard to protect your teeth while you sleep.
